This is part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. As part of the City of Trees initiative, it’s proposed to plant 3,175 new trees in Scholes Park (on at the South end of Gatley Hill, near the Firs Road entrance). City of Trees aims to plant nearly three million new trees across Greater Manchester – one for every person who lives here.
Stockport Council have stated that the site has been chosen for its suitability for woodland planting whilst limiting the impact on other users of the area and maximising tree cover. Site surveys have been undertaken to ensure that the proposed planting will not interfere with any existing important habitat spaces. The trees will be located set back from footpaths to make sure that sight lines are maintained and site users do not feel hemmed in by the trees.
The Nature for Climate Fund has been provided as a wider package of measures to help achieve the Government’s net carbon zero requirement by 2050. Tree planting is an important part of a programme of measures that reduce our vulnerability to climate change. Trees absorb the main greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide) and trap pollution, intercept and use rainwater to grow, which can lower the risk of flooding.
This project sits alongside Stockport Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency and planting more trees in the borough is a key part of our response to this. The Carbon Action Now initiative has identified the need to plant up one new woodland every year for ten years, this project represents a significant step to the delivery of this aim.
